Mold Design Engineer II

WHY DO WE NEED YOU?

The Mold Design Engineer will leverage their skills to design innovative products that meet customer needs. The engineer will coordinate mold tooling builds, vendor qualification runs, and plant trials. The engineer will interface and collaborate with other CertainTeed functions including manufacturing, product management, quality control, purchasing, and logistics representatives to successfully launch new injection molded products. The engineer is expected to use fundamental engineering principles, along with quality methodology, to reduce risk and ensure a successful product launch. In addition, the engineer will be expected to overcome obstacles that arise by solving technical challenges directly or by reaching out to other individuals or functions within Saint-Gobain. The engineer will work closely with manufacturing to assure optimal performance of existing injection mold tooling. This position reports to the R&D Site Operations Director and will be based out of either McPherson, KS, or Jackson, MI.

Essential Functions

  • Injection mold product design and documentation, including use of performance simulation tools, such as Moldflow analysis.
  • Demonstrate the feasibility of a concept using design, prototyping, 3D modeling and testing. Ensure that the product design is robust utilizing tools, such as CAD and CAE software, Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Design of Experiments (DOE), testing, and DFMEAs.
  • Develop innovative ideas and capture invention disclosures.
  • Proficient at leading a team to launch products, keeping the project on schedule, assuring deliverables are met, and obstacles are overcome.
  • Lead a team to identify manufacturing specifications for new products and ensure that the product can be produced at target performance levels through plant capability trials.
  • Perform product tests to gain final approval from key stakeholders. Lead warrant memo process for all new product launches.
  • Management of mold tooling vendors, coordinating mold trials at vendor sites.
  • Prepare statements of work (SOW) for tool fabrication bids.
  • Partner with key tooling vendors to design, test, qualify, and launch new manufacturing mold tooling.
  • Travel to mold tooling vendors for pre-shipment trials.
  • Support manufacturing on mold process and tooling related items.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree +3 years of experience in Mechanical, Industrial or Design Engineering, within a manufacturing or R&D environment required.

  • Experience and ability to troubleshoot injection mold tooling required.
  • Effective in the presentation and communication of technical material and have an in-depth mechanical background, with hands-on understanding of machining practices and equipment and operations design.
  • Strong demonstrated CAD skills required.
  • Knowledge in the design of injection mold tooling required.
  • Excellent project management skills, innovative thinking and a drive for success are desired.

Requirements include excellent verbal communication, a strong safety and attendance record, and the ability to follow directions. Candidates must be able to work flexible hours (including overtime and alternative shifts when needed), tolerate varying environmental conditions (e.g., heat, cold, noise, dust), wear required PPE (e.g., safety shoes, glasses, gloves, etc.), and meet the demands of a fast-paced production line. The role demands teamwork and independent work, with a willingness to cross-train across technical areas.

  • Work on reliability improvement projects with Mechanics and Electricians.

  • Work with suppliers to find solution of frequent maintenance issues.
  • Track Key Performance Indicators and update Reliability Board.
  • Write applicable Maintenance Procedures to promote defect-free maintenance work
  • Maintaining, developing, and entering machine and part data into CMMS
  • Help EHS department to create various procedures
  • Help implement / improve E-Check, AM Calendar and E-Tag system
  • Other related duties and responsibilities as assigned by Management

Customer Service, Human Resources, Finance, R&D & marketing/product support are located within the site & report directly to various other managers. 

  • Manage, direct, and coordinate all operations directly related to the production and shipment of all products produced by the facility: Materials Management, Manufacturing and Manufacturing Systems, Facilities Engineering/Maintenance, Quality Assurance, Shipping and Receiving, Process Engineering, Purchasing
  • Manage, direct, and coordinate Plant staff functions. Manage positive employee relations.
  • Staff all above functions, as appropriate to the most effective achievement of operational goals and objectives.
  • Design and administer effective Human Resources programs to equip employees to achieve business goals and to foster career development and organizational succession plans
  • Ensure that the facility is operating safely and in full environmental compliance.
  • Serve as principal facility communications liaison with other Waterproofing, Company, and external contacts
  • Prepare operational plans and budgets, and report to appropriate Management on actual performance vs. those plans.

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferably in materials, manufacturing, chemical or mechanical engineering is required. A master's degree is a plus.

  • Assist managers, supervisors & operators with problems & answer any questions they may have concerning health and safety matters.
  • Assists with preparing and administering various safety programs.
  • Prepares and distributes safety program aids such as instructional material, handouts, evaluation forms, and visual aids; sets up audiovisual equipment and makes presentations when necessary.
  • Schedules and administers Forklift Safety Program and schedules one onsite safety shoe trucks each year for employees to purchase safety shoes.
  • Support adherence to EH&S Systems by hourly workforce, lead by example.
  • Will participate in the development, understanding and review of all position JSA’s.
  • Document Controller for all OSHA documents.
  • Maintain and update Corrective & Preventive Action, Objectives & Program and Performance Measurement & Monitoring Logs.
  • Collect/enter Near Miss/SMAT and Forklift SMAT card info into plant tracking spreadsheet.

 

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS?

  • Bachelor's Degree in Safety and/or Environment discipline preferred but would consider a business degree with appropriate Manufacturing experience, required.
  • 2+ years experience in a Experience in a manufacturing environment 
  • Excellent computer skills with emphasis on Excel and familiarity software systems is necessary. Excellent analytical and negotiating skills, combined with good oral and written communication skills, and excellent organization, planning, purchasing and follow up skills will lead to success at this position. Ability to download, analyze and manipulate large amounts of data.

This position is responsible for creation of custom injection mold tools for silicone injection molded components related to the life science biopharmaceutical manufacturing industry. Tooling will include the injection tooling, mandrels, fixturing, mandrel removal tools and any other required tooling for production to efficiently interact with the injection tool.

Job Functions:

  • Design injection mold tooling, fixtures, guides – Simple tooling modifications to custom complex tooling
  • Maintain tool drawings as controlled documents using PDM

Essential Functions:

  • Acquire and use practical and technical knowledge of the processes related to Manufacturing of Insulation

  • Complete tasks related to monitoring/trending and troubleshooting manufacturing processes
  • Assist with troubleshooting and solving problems related to process efficiency and product quality.
